AnimusBy: Courtney Garkani
It’s a Tuesday afternoon during the first week of September and it's been just a few hours since everyone dragged themselves home from the first day of school. But that doesn't mean sitting around wasting the day away on homework or sports for Harbor seniors Tyler Palmquist, Nathan Frank, Matt Spicer, and OCC freshman Drew Cain. Today, along with the next couple of days leading up to their third gig at the Tiki Bar on September 7th, they are practicing. Well if you consider goofing around with a few guitars, amps, a drum set, and a microphone practice. So here's a little insight of what--or rather who Animus is and how quickly they've grown from a garage jam session to taking on big venues in just a few short months. CG: What genre do you consider yourselves? And who are you influenced by? AB: Alternative Rock, definitely. We get a lot of inspiration from The Black Keys, Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters, Stone Temple Pilots, and Nirvana. CG: How long have you known each other? And how did you form your band? TP: Well Nathan, Matt, and I have gone to school together for a little over ten years now. DC: In my sophomore year and Nathan’s freshman year of high school we had math class together and would talk about forming a band and stuff. CG: Where have you preformed? AB: Hurley Warehouse Battle of the Bands, Blue Beet, and the Tiki Bar. CG: Any upcoming shows? AB: We have Coach House on September 15th, which we are really excited for, and diPiazza's on the 30th of this month. CG: What song do you perform most frequently? AB: What's Left which was written by all of us. CG: What is your favorite cover to perform? AB: Probably Buttons by the Weeks or Big Jet Plane by Angus and Julia Stone. CG: Who writes your songs and what are the main topics of them? AB: We all sit down and write together. We mainly draw inspiration from our relationships with people in general. CG: What does "Animus" mean? AB: Well Nathan found the word in his psychology textbook and thought it sounded cool so we looked it up and it means "inner-self or soul" which was kind of cool too. CG: What is the ultimate direction for your band? AB: To have a fan base that actually likes our music and not just because they are our friends and basically to take it as far as we can CG: How can fans gain access to your music? AB: By liking our fanpage which you can do by clicking this! CG: Most embarrassing moments on stage? DC: I broke the kick stop on my drum set and started yelling at the tech guy in the middle of one of our songs. CG: Advice for anyone interested in starting a band? AB: Make sure your band members are your friends because you will be spending a lot of time with them. And just have fun and never stop playing. |
