The Best of 2012 Editor's Picks
By: Courtney Garkani
Music seemed to be everywhere we looked, or I guess listened, in 2012. From breakout artists like Frank Ocean that played a large role in many captions on profile pictures, to possibly one of the strangest collaborations of the year, yes I am talking about the return of Owl City somehow intertwined with the annoying voice of Carly Rae Jepsen. We finally counted up the amount of songs with lyrics like "till the world ends" and "2012" to realize on December 22nd that they are now nothing but awkward. However, I am not here to pick out the worst, but if I do here We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together one more time I might go insane. Below is what I believe are the best artists, albums, and songs this past year, I'm not asking you to agree, but really you have awful taste if you don't. Ha, I'm only kidding.

Best New Artist: Imagine Dragons
Lyrics like “I’m never changing who I am” and “Radioactive” often come to mind when thinking of the quirky, electro-pop sound of Imagine Dragons. However those two recognizable singles are just a small fraction of the enticing lyrics that encompass their debut album, Night Visions, which debuted this past September. Best New Song: Anna Sun, WALK THE MOON It’s hard not to think of the careless days of summer when the lyrics “Anna Sun” pour from the speakers of the radio. The chart topping single was released at the beginning of 2012 and sure made its way onto everyone’s playlists by the end of July. Best Replacement to Lady Gaga: Lana del Rey Lana del Rey somehow manages to tie a fetish for weird, old dudes with strange song titles and make it a smash hit. One look at her pointy nails and deep intros, and at first you may be a bit creped out. However Lana, as most fans refer to her, has a unique sound and lovely face to match, which keeps her audience coming back. Best Album: Babel, Mumford and Sons No surprise here. The folk rock band once again released an unforgettable album and to match, a tour that kept everyone’s heads spinning. Best Collaboration: Sweet Nothing, Florence Welch and Calvin Harris The angelic voice of Florence and the Machine’s, Florence Welch, mixed in to a remarkable beat by Calvin Harris, well how can you go wrong? Actually its probably pretty easy to, but Calvin Harris is not known to disappoint, so it almost seemed repetitive when we bowed down to him once again for creating the “Sweet Nothing” masterpiece. All we can say is keep it coming Calvin. Best Song to Get Stuck in Your Head: Thrift Shop, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis The song that sent us all from Nordies and Bloomies to Goodwill and the Salvation Army kind of deserves a round of applause. Not only does getting “got twenty-dollars in ma pocket” play on reply in our heads, but inspires us to walk around with just a few bucks as well. Hey at least we got a one of a kind shirt we didn't pay fifty-dollars for. |
