The Growlers Take the StageBy: Alex Barnes
Utilizing only the finest outdated recording equipment, The Growlers’ scratchy, low-fidelity vibes are unlike that of any other band. A local group based out of the neighboring Costa Mesa, they masterfully incorporate the surf and beach culture – a culture practiced and beloved by many a Southern Californian. In their debut album, dubbed Are You In or Are You Out?, the band flaunts this unique sound, intoxicating the listener with their heavy blend of psychedelic surf rock and dark folk. Lead singer Brooks Nielson brings with his grungy vocals a certain air of nonchalance – trying hard not to try hard. A group that makes it a point to stand out from the crowd, The Growlers take obvious pride in their distinctive genre. Upbeat tunes such as Acid Rain and Something Someone Jr. are excellent choices for the beachgoer, while melancholy yet still toe-tapping songs like Wandering Eyes and Tijuana are perfect for late night drives. This entrancing, offbeat band with a penchant for understated coolness revives the surf rock native to 1960’s California, but puts a Bob Dylan-esque spin on the previously obsolete genre. With a style and sound rivaled by none, it will be interesting to see how the rest of their young career will play out. If you enjoyed this album, be on the lookout for their upcoming album, Hung at Heart, scheduled for release this January. |
