PIE NOT: THE AUSSIE STYLE BAKERY
PIE NOT? DON'T OVER THINK THIS ONE. THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE: YES.
Prior to their opening, getting your hands on a genuine Australian meatpie took quite a journey, but this Aussie style bakery is just down the street. In the land down under, there are many of these pie shops on any given street, but in these parts, they seem to have a monopoly.
These CD sized treats are baked fresh daily in a variety of fillings, including ground beef, "chook" (australian slang for chicken), and even a "brekkie" pie for a morning snack. Other than their pies, bakery treats like the "slice of heaven", chocolate and caramel stacked on shortbread, as well as the "map a' Tassie" (slang for a woman's bikini bottom, which is similar to the shape of tasmania), a triangle shaped puffed pastry, make up their "sweet treats". If you're into coffee, they have you covered with organic brew straight from Byron Bay.
The prices on the pies are pretty set. A standard pie is going to run you $5.50, and add another buck on top of that if you want a premium one. Nothing to complain about in my book for something that is baked fresh with fine ingredients and is very filling.
Possibly my favorite part of the whole place is the staff, most of whom have a killer Aussie accent. If that doesn't give you an authentic vibe, I don't know what will. The place is very casual and inviting with a hands on group of people running it, who will take the time to make sure you understand what you are ordering. They're open from 8 AM to 7 PM and oddly closed on Mondays, serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, and everything in between. (http://www.pienot.com/comingsoon/) -GRIFFIN SHARP
