Surfer Spotlight: Newport's Very Own Shelby Detmers Is Ready to Shred
By: Amanda Penna
Surfing takes a lot of skill, passion, hard work, and dedication. It takes time to learn and succeed in surfing; it’s actually a lot harder than it looks. One young rig has accomplished all of these skills and affected society in other ways as well. Eighteen year old, Shelby Detmers stuns locals with her talent and also her title of being a Jr. Pro. Maintaining this title isn’t easy for an average girl. Detmers graduated Newport Harbor High School last spring and is currently taking a semester off from college to focus on her surfing. She hopes to gain attention in order to make a name for herself in the surfer world. “My surf inspiration is one of my good friends and also ex pro surfer, Holly Beck. She's done a fantastic job of marketing herself and has had a long career in surfing, which is really hard to do especially for a girl,” said Detmers. Besides surfing, Detmers also enjoys other activities. She loves photography, concerts, and also likes to hang out with friends. Also, when Detmers surfs, she uses any of her Bill Johnson surfboards because they all have some form of Led Zeppelin drawings, which she admires the most. Bill Johnson Surfboards, Cobian Sandel, Eco Sunscreen, Xcel Wetsuits, HDX Hydration Mix, Spy Optics, and The Froghouse sponsor this talented young gal. Detmers has accomplished so much with her surfing and has only been apart of this sport for six years. Detmers, being so young and already a Jr. Pro, is very inspirational to all young ladies that love the water and want to become a pro as well. This gifted rig hopes to give a better name for women pro surfers and wishes to have a long lasting career as well. |
